Hooray for Turkey Day!

We had a fabulous trip down to LA for Thanksgiving.  Although we were only there for about a week, we really packed in the fun.  I’m always amused at what my girls remember.  What stands out to me isn’t always what stands out to them.  During our vacation, we went to Disneyland, played with the cousins, ate a delicious turkey dinner, and explored the beach.  All very memorable, right?

Well, it turns out that on Monday, Leina had to talk about what she did over Thanksgiving.  She went on and on about playing with her cousins and eating mounds of mashed potatoes with gravy.  She did not, however, mention Disneyland at all.  For her, seeing her Papa, Tutu, and cousins where the highlight of the trip.   When I was chatting with her teacher at pick-up and mentioned our Disneyland adventure, she was surprised.  Leina had not said a word.  For Leina, this trip was about family.

If I thought that was funny, imagine my surprise when I went to pick up Kulia from preschool.  Her teacher asked me how long the flight was to Hawaii.  Huh?!?!  Turns out Kulia told everyone she went to her Papa and Tutu’s house in Hawaii on the airplane.  Um… yeah.  I had to explain that we actually took a plane to LA where we walked along a beach in Palos Verdes not Hawaii.  I wish!

If you asked Kevin about our vacation, he’ll tell you all about Disneyland.  Kevin has been to the happiest place on earth three time.  Once as a child.  Once during our college days.  Once last week.  Yup,  that’s right.  So for Kevin, getting to Disneyland with his kids as magic.  They were more than willing to go in Dumbo with him and the Teacups.  He loved every minute of it.

For me, I was happy to meet up with some old friends from high school and reconnect.  There is something about old friends and remembering old times.  Although we have all grown up, I can still see the kid behind each face.  It’s amazing how such gawky teens could turn into such beautiful swans.  It makes me smile to remember us all on the JV basketball team that managed to go an entire season without winning a single game.  We might have sucked at basketball, but man did we have a great time trying.

Four different people, four different vacation memories.  But for all of us, a truly wonderful stay.

Halloween Review

Yes, it’s been a while since Halloween but my hands have been full with getting everyone healthy again.  Now that I have some “me” time back, I can catch up on some much needed website updating!

This year for Halloween, Leina was a vampire.  This was a major departure for us.  In the past, Leina has shied away from anything spooky on Halloween.  All costumes involved fairies, princesses or butterflies.  Cute, not scary.  But this year, she was ready for some fright!  She wanted a long black cape, fang teeth, and blood.  I was only too happy to oblige.  Kulia, thankfully, continued the tread of world’s easiest costume.  Black pants + black shirt with extra.  Last year it was a set of butterfly wings.  This year, it was ears and a tail for a very cute black kitty.   I got off very, very easy.

While I recovered from my oral surgery, Kevin took the girls to two Halloween parties.  First, they stopped off at Kat and Josh’s bash.  I heard that Josh was dressing up as Captain Hammer.  It wasn’t much of a stretch to figure out Kevin’s costume.  Hello Dr. Horrible!  Those two, I swear, were separated at birth.

After lots of candy and some cookie decorating, Kevin herded the kids up to his dad’s house for Manny’s yearly Halloween party.  The girls got to eat more candy, play with their cousins, and then consume more treats.  At the end of it all they were exhausted and shaking all at the same time.

I am sad to have missed all the Halloween fun but I must say, having teeth removed/implanted right before Halloween is a great way to limit your candy consumption.  Suddenly, chocolate bars full of nuts and chewy caramel loose their charm.  I can honestly say that this is the first year I did not snack on any of the candy I was handing out.  A first.   And, lets face it, probably a last as well!

Better But Tired

I’m pretty much back on track today but just so very, very tired. Bone tired really. I find myself curling up to sleep at the drop of a hat and my eyelids feel so heavy and dry. I don’t know if I’ll make it through the day without a nap.

I had to volunteer in Leina’s classroom this morning which is always draining. The constant motion and noise and energy is unbelievable. Today, it pretty much did me in. And, to top it all off, I had two kids look right at me and let out a big, juicy, phlegmy cough all over my face. I am so dead. I am already planning for the ensuing sickness because there is no amount of Airborne or ColdEze that can save me now. Of course, I am still on some heavy duty anti-biotics so maybe there is hope yet.

Really, though, I am counting the minutes until I can curl up and sleep. The pounding rain and looming clouds only add to my need to slumber. If only my children would respond the same. Unfortunately, the weather means a day of school without outsides recess so to say they are “on fire” in laughably understated. I have cute pictures to post from the Halloween parties they went to over the weekend but they’ll have to wait till tomorrow. Now, I’m off the throw together some food and watch the clock until 2pm. Then I’m turning off the phones and turning down the covers. Lookout nap time….. here I come!

In and Out

Tomorrow is the big day. In a very bizarre and ironic twist of fate, I have to get two teeth removed and one tooth implanted. That just seems wrong, doesn’t it? How can I have too many teeth and not enough teeth all at the same time?!?!? I guess some of us are just extra lucky. Don’t hate me. Really.

I’m actually ok with the removal part. I’ve had teeth pulled before and it isn’t that bad. Ok, it’s bad but not THAT bad. Two more wisdom teeth will be yanked tomorrow leaving only one left. Gotta same something for later, right? And while I’m under, I’m going to have the first of four implants started. Yup. Four. Don’t ask. Like I said, just crazy lucky in the teeth department.

I have stocked up with rented videos – Season One of Mad Men and Dexter. I have prepped ice bags. My fridge is bursting with pudding, yogurt and mac & cheese. Must remember to tape notes to said food items so my husband/voracious children do not eat my special gumming food. Got all my meds lined up and ready to ingest. Bring on the dental work! Bring it!

(Or not. Gulp!)

Return of the Great Pumpkin

Yes, that’s right.  Time for the annual walk down memory lane.  Time for this mother to sit and sob into her coffee over how big her girls are getting.  I don’t seem to notice the inches as they appear day by day but when I see pictures that are years apart, the difference is astounding.  So here it is, the annual photo montage.

Here we are our first year, 2005, when Leina was only a 2 years old. Kulia was lugged around in the backpack and didn’t make it into the shot.

In 2006, Kulia joined in the fun. She was a wee thing but totally game. Can you believe how much Leina grew in just one year?!?!?

In the 2007 entry to our montage, it’s Kulia’s turn to amaze me with her growth spurt.

2008 arrived and suddenly, Leina looks like a little girl.  And, of course, Patches snuck into the photo.

This year?  Well, they continue to grow despite my commands to stay little.

Much fun was had at the farm.  There were quite a few animal sightings. Like…..

Of course they each found a pumpkin to bring home but even more fun was using the pumpkins for some bowling.

The hay maze was far too easy for the girls this year.  It was conquered with ease.

And finally, a quick slide or two to round out the day.  Did you know you can get even more speed if you sit on your sister?

Of course, all good things must come to an end.  But no long faces, I’m sure 2010 will be here before you know it!

I Lied

Leina was crazy goofy yesterday.  I have no idea what bug got into her system but she was running around doing the silliest things.  I was crafting away when I heard her yell out, “Mom!  Take a picture of me!”  She was dressed as this crazy superhero with swim goggles and a cape.  It was hilarious.  I snapped a few pictures and we giggled as we looked through them together.  At the end, Leina turned to me, all serious, and said, “Now mommy, you aren’t going to put these on the computer, are you?”

“Of course not honey.” I replied.

I lied.

Enjoy!
