On the road

Well, I’ve arrived in Japan.  Traveling for work is always fun.  I showed up at the airport and while waiting to get on the plane 3 others coworkers showed up as well.  One of them a good friend, and expierenced traveller, so once again going to a foriegn country was really easy.

The plane ride was the usual 11 hours in a confined space.  The food didn’t suck so much though, which was nice.  But the real pleasure of international travel is the movies.  No longer are you required to crane your head to see the screen at the front of your section. Now, you get a nice in-seat personal video system and and can choose which movies you want to watch.  United’s system is kind of basic but it’s still nice to have 6 movies and a few TV shows to choose from.  Since my laptop battery only lasts 2 hours and it was just recalled on Tuesday,  I opted not work on the plane.  It was a tough decision but I don’t shy away from those big calls – I’m a “Decider” (when my wife lets me) ;).  So, since I usually get to see 5-6 movies a year, having to sit and watch 4 shows in a row was kind of a nice torture.  Here’s the breakdown:

1) The Great Debaters (Denzel Washington).  – This was a great movie.  I was expecting the typical feel good underdog kind of thing that’s just right when you’ve been up since 5am but it was actually a really good movie.  Not only a great story and acting but the characters were all really well developed and had a lot of depth.  My only regret was that it wasn’t longer.  There was so much more to the life of the characters in this small Texas town that I really wanted to see more of each one.  It did the movie good though to keep that on the periphery and focus on the story.  But still I wish this movie had been 4 hours instead of 2 – that also would have made the flight go faster!

 2. National Treasure 2: Book of Something or Other.   Why didn’t Nicholas Cage get cast as the new James Bond instead of Daniel Craig?  Just go watch this movie and you’ll know why.  Still, it was an “entertaining romp” to paraphrase Roeper (At The Movies reviewer).  and was a good popcorn flick.  If only I’d remembered to pack my microwave.  Helen Mirren (spl?) was fun though but she needed more screen time.

 3.  Walk Hard – The Dewey Cox Story – This was a Judd Aptow farce making fun of the recent singer-biopics and it was really funny.  Maybe it was the punchiness of sitting in the same seat for the last 7 hours but it was nice to not have to concentrate on a plot.  This movie just lampooned every concievable “classic” scene from a bio-pic and while there were a few misses typical of these movies, in general it worked really well and I chuckled to myself for a good 90 minutes.

 4. Enchanted – If you are a romantic / Disney-Princess loving person you have to see this movie.  If you’re not (and you know who you are Josh) then don’t.  This is the movie where a cartoon “Cinderella” character is brought to real life by the wicked step-mother Queen.  While the movie was simple and formulaic it was still very well done and cute.  I loved the fact that the main character kept breaking into song and all these real rats and pigeons would show up and all the other people in the movie would freak out.  I am actually thinking about letting Leina see it but I worry she’ll try to get chipmunks to help her clean her room.  My only complaint was Patrick Dempsey (spl?).  The man was just blah.  Really nothing there.  I don’t see what everyone likes about him.  He really doesn’t do anything for me?  I was reallly hoping for some McSteamy but I didn’t see it.  Maybe I should start watching Grey’s Anatomy?

So there’s a breakdown of the movies seen on my flight over.  Thankfully I get to pick 4 different movies on the way back.  It almost makes air travel worth it 😉

It’s Coming Down!

Right now, even as I type, Elmo and Kevin are downstairs demolishing my kitchen.  Literally, everything but the kitchen sink is coming out.  I’m having a hard time with all the chaos.  Nothing is where it should be so trying to find something as simple as a coffee mug requires a crazy amount of work.  I’m trying to keep my eye on the big picture but the idea of putting everything away is a tad daunting.  Lets just say, I have far too much kitchen stuff.  It’s amazing how many things one acquires over three years.  I’m taking the opportunity to purge, purge, purge.  Yes!  Hopefully by the end of the day today, the construction phase will be over and I can begin putting the tattered pieces of my kitchen back together.

While Papa slaves away over our cabinets, Tutu has taken charge of the kids.  Everyday they are writing a new story together, drawing pictures or reading library books.  Pretty much kid heaven if ever there was one.  This frees me to pace around the kitchen anxiously wondering how I’ll ever get all this stuff packed away.  Life is good!

I forgot to snap a “before” picture but I’m sure I’ll post an “after” shot.  Prepare to be wowed…

Not Home Yet

So this is the new site.  Why, you ask?  Mostly because I am a horrible speller.  It’s true, really, I don’t mind admitting it.  Our old blog program didn’t have a spell check and I was too lazy to type everything in Word first and then paste it over to the website.  Instead, I just tried to use short small words that were easy to spell.  But man did I want a spell check.  So now, voila!  Spell check!  Isn’t it lovely?

Of course, I’m totally not used to how this blog looks and feels now.  It’s all so new and strange and, well, blue.  Kevin claims it is a work in progress so I suppose it will eventually morph into something familiar.  But right now, it just feels a bit odd.

Anyway, today is the first day of spring break and it is lovely.  Blue skies, sunshine, and happy daffodils bobbing in the wind.  I took the girls to the zoo where Leina attended zoo camp and Kulia and I wandered about stalking the animals.  Actually, that isn’t quite true.  Kulia wasn’t so interested in the animals.  Really, all she wanted to do was climb on the rocks along the trails.  Yup, that’s right.  I stood on the side of the trail and watched her scramble up and down a set for four rocks for about 40 minutes.  I couldn’t drag her away from those rocks to save my life.  All she wanted was to climb rocks.  Sigh.

She also decided she really doesn’t like zebras.  Come on now kid, zebras?  They are totally benign.  They don’t have sharp teeth or claws, they don’t smell funny or throw their feces at you, and they are the least exotic animal at the zoo looking like a horse with stripes.  But Kulia wouldn’t even walk past their enclosure or look at them.  She keep insisting that they were too “sneaky”.  Yes, that’s right, the large grazing zebra were declared “sneaky” and soundly rebuffed by my youngest.   A love of boulders and sneaky zebras.  That’s my baby for you!

It’s as bad as…

After shopping at IKEA this weekend we now have a new definition of bad.

It’s no longer as bad as, a “poopy diaper.” Now it’s as bad as an “IKEA pizza pocket.” They were wickedly bad. And I mean that in a literal sense. The whole grain crust was thick, leathery and yuck. The processed meat thing inside was even worse. Take my advice and stay with the meatballs and cinnamon rolls. Those Swedes can make good, cheap furniture but they can’t make a pizza pocket.

At least we have a new definition of bad in the McLaughlin house now.

Busy Busy

Let’s see. Where exactly did this weekend go? On Friday, I got a tooth yanked that was abscessed. It hurt. The drugs really knocked me out for the rest of the day which was ok except I totally forgot that Grandma Vicki was coming down for the weekend to visit the girls. I was pretty out of it all weekend so I’m not sure what they did. Me, I mostly just slept and tried to recover. Thank goodness for pudding is all I can say!

I did manage to drag my sorry self down to IKEA with Kevin on Sunday and we ordered the rest of our kitchen cabinets. They are arriving on Wed. Yikes! Once they are here we will have no excuse left. The thought of tearing up my kitchen makes me break out in hives but I need to keep looking at the big picture, right? Out with the old and in with the new!

Really?

It was a perfect weekend for the coast. The beautiful spring weather held for us all weekend. I’m so glad to hear that Kevin managed so easily without me. All this time I’ve been hesitant to leave fearing that he’d be in over his head. Now that I know he has things so very well under control? Well, let’s just say that the mommy going away weekend once every year is definately going to increase. Yes indeed.

Over the weekend I finished a very cute quilt top that is, unfortunately, earmarked for a family Christmas present so I have to pictures I can post here. We also discovered that the cute local quilt shop was having a going out of business/retirement blow out. It was a little bittersweet. One the one hand, the prices on everything were phenominal. But on the other, that meant no more quilt store in Lincoln City. Sigh. Ah well, I guess that means next time we’ll have to try somewhere new.

I wonder if Kat is free next weekend…or do you think that’s too soon?
