Gone But Not Forgotten

Yes, I’m still alive. No, the computer hasn’t exploded. I’ve just been, well, a little freaked out. You see, Mini-Me will be here in a month.

Ack!

So the last few days, I’ve been running around trying to figure out how, exactly, to prepare for the next 18 years of her life before her arrival. Kevin, wise man that he is, has learned to quietly tip-toe away when he sees me gnashing my teeth and rolling my eyes while charting the pros and cons of Pampers vs Huggies. It’s like a bad scene from Where the Wild Things Are except I appear to the only Wild Thing.

Probaby the worse part is that, in reality, I have no idea at all what I’m doing. Oh yes, I have the crib and the car seat but it’s the little stuff that’s killing me. Do you have any idea how many types of diaper cremes are on the market? Or nursing pad? Diaper wipes? Bottle nipples? Why can’t someone just put together a huge kit and guarentee that EVERYTHING you’ll need for the first month will be in there. Dude, that’d be worth $1,000 just for piece of mind alone! Instead, I find myself wandering through Babies R Us wondering if that diaper wipe warmer really will make my child happy or not and thoughtfully reading the advertisment claiming that playing Mozart over Bach will increase brain development.

Ack! (Or have I already said that?!?!)

So please forgive me if my blogging is a little sporatic. Odds are pretty good I’m tussling with the deeper issue of which baby bottle liner works best.

I knew we should have just adopted another dog but noooooo, Kevin wanted a baby. Ack.

The Chase

So my dad is a big teaser. This is a well known fact. As a kid, he used to tease his dog which was a little cocker spaniel. I guess old habits die hard because when he comes to visit, he loves to tease Artie too. Now, there is one very large difference between Artie and a cocker spaniel… about 60lbs as my dad found out the hard way.

It started out innocently enough. One afternoon, we hooked up the pooch and set out on our afternoon walk through the neighborhood. Artie was huffing and puffing along like the fat sausage he is when we hit the park blocks. These are four blocks of green grass and trees in the middle of our neighborhood. It’s popular with dogs and kids playing ball. My dad must have been feeling frisky because he turned to me and said, “I want to run Artie up the block.” Now, Artie isn’t big on running. He’ll lope along for a while but he usually gets tired and plops down under some shade once he’s had his fill and my dad was going on about how fat Artie was and how he could out run him so I handed over the leash and they took off.

Sure enough, Artie sort of lumbered along and my dad had no problem keeping up with him. At the end of they block, they stopped and waited for my mom & I to catch up. When we got there, Elmo decided he was going to run another block with Artie to really exhaust him so he took off again. Only this time, Artie had different plans.

For whatever reason, Artie perked up. He decided Elmo wanted to play and he turned on the energy. He started jumping up and down, bouncing off my dad and nipping at him. In his excitement, he grabbed my dad’s arm and actually drew a little blood. Nothing major but Elmo stopped running and handed the pooch back to me to calm him down. Artie was disappointed that the fun was ending but settled down nicely as we headed my home. Round One to Artie.

The lesson was simply enough – no running with the dog. Right? Wrong.

The very next day, we head out for the afternoon walk. All goes well until we’re about two blocks from home and Elmo spots these two fat squirrels sitting in the middle of the road. Instantly, he turns to Artie and starts to egg him on. Now, on Artie’s list of favorite things to chase, squirrels are in the top three. By the time Elmo was done, Artie was straining at the end of the leash ready to make a dash for the squirrels.

“Dad, stop teasing him or he’s going to pull me off my feet!” I told my father.

“Give him to me,” Elmo replied, “and I’ll let him chase those squirrels.”

“He’ll lung and pull you off your feet,” I warned my dad.

“Nah, I can keep up with this fat dog,” my dad replied confidently.

Now, at this point, I should have stopped and taken a moment to recall the last time my dad took the leash but I didn’t. I did the unthinkable and handed my dad the leash.

“Hey Artie”, he cried, “go get those squirrels!!!!”

Artie didn’t need to be told twice. He took off at top chasing speed across the street after those squirrels. The squirrels weren’t slouches either and took off for the nearest tree. Poor old dad. He also took off at top speed but he didn’t stand a chance. Much to his surprise and dismay, after only a few moments, Artie reached the end of the leash and kept on going. Elmo’s momentum was already forward since he was running at top speed and the result…. well, when 90lbs of dog flesh hit the end of the leash, Elmo was whipped off his feet.

Elmo didn’t just fall. He hit the pavement, flipped a summersault, and was dragged across the street. His only saving grace was that the squirrels ran up a tree and Artie stopped at the base. Otherwise, it’s anyone’s guess how far he’d have been dragged. My mom and I rushed over and once we confirmed there was no permanent injury, we began to laugh. Poor daddy lay sprawled in the middle of the street bleeding from both knees. He looked like a 12 year old kid who was just learning to skateboard thanks to the massive strawberries that were bleeding down his leg. His left hand, which was holding the leash, had been dragged along the ground as well. The result looked like he’s been a bar fight since every knuckle was bloody. Thank goodness he had a long sleeve shirt on or his elbows whould have been minced meat as well. Round Two, Artie.

He hobbled home and I broke out the first aid kit. Seven bandages and half a tube of Neosporin later, he was patched up but I don’t think I had stopped laughing. It was like something out of a Road Runner/Coyote cartoon. I mean, how many people get to see their dad dragged down the street by a fat dog chasing squirrels? If only I’d had my video camera, I could be rich.

The good news is that I think Elmo has finally learned not to run with the dog.

At least, I hope so.

Time Flies

This last week just disappeared.

My parents flew up for one last harrah before Mini Me arrived and man were we busy. We took in a Beavers baseball game, ate dim sum till we popped, helped celebrate Kat’s big 30th birthday, watched movies and worked to finish up household projects. But it was all time well spent because at the end of the week, the Volvo was running like a top and the baby room was ready for the kid. Yes, I have pictures, but the camera isn’t set up for my computer so you’ll have to wait for Kevin to come home and up load them tonight. Lets just say, my mom & I rock.

One of the highlights of the week was that I managed to arrange ultrasound #4 while JT and Elmo were here and they got a sneak peek at their next grandbaby. Neither had ever seen an ultrasound before so it was pretty cool to watch her heart beat and see her hands and feet. (And let me tell you, she has some pretty massive feet!!) Right now, she’s clocking in at a totally normal 4lbs 7oz so all looks well there. Now if I can just survive this summer heat without swelling up like a blow fish, all will be well.

It’s eerily quiet here now without them. Artie has been sleeping on the sofa, exhausted from all the activity. Actually, there’s a very funny story about Artie and my dad but I think I’ll have to wait for tomorrow to blog that one. Lets just say right now, the score is Artie 2 and Elmo 0.

Poor daddy. (hee hee)

Almost There

Well, were almost there, and Chrissie’s getting bigger and bigger. Here’s the latest profile shots to prove it.

We’ve been having a great time with JT & Elmo on their visit. Elmo fixed me breakfast this morning, and I must say, his potatoes are out of sight! He’s been having a lot fun with Artie too. In fact, as you can see from this picture, he’s worn our dog out:

Pressure Time

I’m in trouble now.

I’ve heard from Felix and he reports that his daughter, Kiera, entered the world on Friday around 11:45pm. Until he called, I could fool myself that I had all the time in the world because Felix and Kathy were my buffers, my litmus test, my spotted owl. So long as they were pre-birth, I didn’t have a care in the world. And what did they do? They went and had their kid.

Can you believe it?

And you KNOW what that means, right? I’m the next (and the last) sitting duck.

Kevin and I have been pretty horrified by our birthing class and learning about how painful birth is and how may things can happen. You don’t just pop the kid out. There’s lots of crying and screaming and tearing that happens first. Gulp. In fact, after our last class, Kevin looked at me and said, “how do you feel about just scheduling a c-section?” Yeah, it was that bad.

So to distract myself from my upcoming ordeal, I’ve decided to throw myself into baby prep mode. I hope by focusing on all the wonderful things that will happen once she’s here, I’ll be able to distract myself from the upcoming delivery. To that end, we’ve started painting the baby room and re-arranging our house to make room for baby. She’ll be here before we know it! (Gulp!)
