Gus

I’m playing around with loading pictures using WordPress and having little luck.  Everything works when Kevin is here but when I try and do it myself, it gets all tangled up.  Sigh.  So I’m uploading these pictures the hard way because they are too cute to pass by.  Seriously.

Here is Leina holding puppy Gus.  She was so tickled to find a dog small enough for her to pick up and he was such a good sport to put up with it.

Kulia decides she wanted in on the action too.  She kept sneaking closer and closer to Leina as I took the pictures.  So here she is, mopped head and all, posing with Gus.

This was a few weeks ago so I’m sure by now Gus is giant and unable to be picked up by small hands.   Lucky dog!

Mats – Check

I’m not an easy person to present shop for.  I like what I like and I’m not a fan of random clutter/useless junk.  I’m a big fan of gift cards or something homemade but stuff? Well, it just doesn’t float my boat.  After years and years and years of searching for the perfect present, Kevin has finally discovered it.  Time.  Yes, more than anything else, I crave time.  Time to myself.  Time to do what I want when I want without having to lug around a diaper pack and a bag of fishies.  Time to stroll through stores and eat at places that don’t offer chicken fingers.  Time.

Sure, I get to leave the house on weekends alone but I’m usually running errands and somewhere in the back of my mind I’m watching the clock aware of the fact that I have to get back home to clean house/fold laundry/cook/parent.  So Kevin has devised the ingenious plan of sending me off for a long weekend away from being a mother as a present.  This year, for my birthday, he sent me down to Ashland.  I took with me that which I needed most.  My sewing machine and Kat.  ‘Cause I don’t think I would want to do that looooong drive alone!  We stayed in a little old house two blocks from downtown Ashland.  We sewed, shopped, ate, talked, and watched all our favorite movies.  The weather was beyond beautiful and we could eat on outside patios beneath shade trees.  Ah, perfect.  Just perfect!

For my project, I took with the me Carla’s birthday present.  It turned out to be a bit more involved than I thought so I just now finished it.  A little late but I don’t think she’ll mind.  I saw this pattern in a catalogue and new I had to make it.  It’s a set of quilted placemats made from a line of fabric from Connecting Threads.  I love the little pocket in front for the matching napkin and silverware.  Take a peek!

Now wouldn’t you love to sit down at this table for a nice meal?

Bloated

Kevin is still here.  Yippee!  Things are delayed so his trip has been pushed back for a bit.  He has no idea what is happening so we are living day by day which is fine by me.

Today Liza and her girls came over for a play date.  It was actually nice enough that they could play outside for a bit.  I think I’m going to start working on the yard this weekend.  I have tons of weeding and cleaning up now that spring his finally here.  I hope.  With my luck it will start hailing again.

For lunch with the girls I decided to make a loaf of fresh bread.  I am a big fan of the no knead bread so I whipped a batch together last night and this morning I left it on the counter to rise.  Since we were out of milk, I loaded up the girls and we did a quick Safeway run before Liza arrrived.  When we got home, we were greeted with a horrible sight.  Corn meal was strewn about the kitchen floor.  My giant ball of dough was nowhere to be seen, and Artie was curled up in a miserable guilty ball whining.  Yup.  He ate the entire ball of uncooked bread dough.  I can only imagine what his stomach feels like right now.  Can too much yeast hurt a dog?  I dunno but we are going to find out.

The entire batch of dough, gone.  What am I going to do with this dog????

Can I Return It?

Kevin came home for lunch today and announced that he has to go on another business trip.  This time, he’s heading for Germany.  He doesn’t know when he’s going but informed me that every day he’s here past Tues is “a gift.”  And all I could think was, “huh, can I return that?”

He’s only been home 10 days and now he’s off again.  When does he leave? Dunno.  How long? Dunno.  But he’s definitely leaving sometime next week.  Ah well, maybe he’ll remember to pick me up something cool from Germany.  This last time he brought me back a package of curry mix from Japan.  With all the directions in Japanese.  Two weeks of wandering around the city and all he found for me was some curry mix.  Humph.  He better step it up this time.  Germany is full of cool stuff, right?  Well, I guess Kevin will find out next week….

The Poop Lie

Never underestimate small children.  Don’t let their diminutive size fool you.  What they lack in height, they make up for in sheer cunning.  Case in point, a few days ago I was sitting at the kitchen table…..

I’ve been working on potty training Kulia for a while now.  I am so very ready to be done with diapers.  So very ready.  But for whatever reason, Kulia has decided to thwart all potty training attempts and insists on using her diaper instead of the very lovely potty chair in the bathroom.  Never one to shy from out right bribery, I explained to Kulia that if she put her poopie on the potty, she would get a Skittle treat.  This simple bribed worked very well for Leina and so I expected Kulia to fall right in line.  Ummm, no.  Kulia has no interest in Skittle treats and her diapers continued to be loaded.  Being a crafty mother, I decided to change tactics.  I took Leina aside and explained to her that if she could get Kulia to use the potty, I would give Leina two Skittle treats for her hard work.  Yes, I was bribing my eldest daughter to coerce my youngest but hey, I’m a trained lawyer remember?  I used to do this stuff for a living.  Leina was very happy to make this deal and for the next few days, every time Leina went to use the bathroom, she convinced Kulia to come along too.  There they would sit, side by side, and chatter together.  Unfortunately, while Kulia was on the training potty, there was no action and Leina began to get a bit ancy.  She wanted a Skittle treat and she decided waiting for Kulia to finally use the toilet was taking far too long.  So she came up with a plan.

I was sitting at the kitchen table one morning, drinking coffee and reading the paper, when I saw Leina rush to the toilet with Kulia in tow.  What Leina didn’t realize was that I could hear every word she was saying from where I sat.  The conversation ran something like this…

Leina: “Come on Kulia.  Just try to go.  If you do we’ll get Skittles!”

Kulia: “No.”

Leina: “Please????  I’ll give you an extra Skittle.”

Kulia: “No.”

They went back and forth like this for a while and then there was a pause.  Leina had been struck with a brilliant, albeit flawed, plan.

Leina: “Kulia!  I have a great idea!  Let’s pretend you did the poopie and tell mommy and then we can get Skittles!”

Kulia: “OK!”

At this point, I heard Leina grab the potty training bin, run some water in it, pour the water into the big toilet, and flush it.

Leina: “OK, now go tell mommy you had a poopie Kulia!”

Kulia: “OK.”

So around the corner comes Kulia sans pants and sans diaper.  She trotts up happily to me and announces, “mommy, me did poopie!” which must have been their prearranged cue because Leina came bounding out of the bathroom jubulantly shouting “she did it!  She did it!  Now we get Skittles!”

Mom: “Kulia!  You did poopie!  I can’t believe it!  Let me go clean it out and then you can get your treats.”

Leina (hands raised to block my way): “Oh mommy, you don’t have to.  I already did it.  I washed it and flushed too.  Can we get our treats?”

Mom: “Leina, tell the truth.  No lying to mommy.  Did Kulia really have a poopie?”

Leina: “um.  Yes?”

I let the silence linger.  Another lawyer trick.  Guilty people hate silence especially after telling a really big lie.  Kulia cracked first.

Kulia: “I no go poopie.”

At this point, Kulia fled to another room.  She pretty much left her sister to the wolves but she knew she had been beaten.  Leina, however, stayed and squirmed a few more moments before she broke down crying and confessed everything.  I forgave her, of course.  I mean really, a part of me was so rather in awe of the complexity of the whole thing.  She really thought it through and I’ve go to say, if I hadn’t been sitting there listening to the whole plan, I’d have probably fallen for it.  I thought the rinsing and flushing a rather brilliant move on her part.  It’s enough to make a mother proud!

Thanks

Well, a big thank you to everyone out there who called or emailed me yesterday.  Thanks for reminding me how very very old I am.  I am now very aware that I’m closer to 40 than 30 and I’m officially half way to 70.  Great.  Happy day!

But really, I had a very nice birthady all told.  Lots of eating and presents and cake.  Yum-o.  Almost makes getting this old worth it.  Now, if it would just stop snowing, I’d be truely happy.  I mean, enough already!  It does make for a very handy excuse as to why I haven’t started in on my garden.  But snow?  In late April?  Where am I living?

I have several funny stories to blog but, unfortunately, I have already told them to people in, like, real life so it seems wierd to blog about them.  So old news and all.  But if nothing exciting happens tomorrow, I will tell you the story of The Poop Lie or The Spider Under the Bed or The New Monitor.  See all the exciting stuff you’ve been missing out on?

But not today.  Today, I am going to spend the next hour glaring out my window at the gloomy grey sky that seems to have permanently attached itself over my house.  Glare.  Glare.  Glare.
