River Day

Over the long weekend, Josh decided to rent this giant powertool digging machine for working on his backyard.  Kevin, never one to turn down the chance to play with a very large tool thingy, was more than eager to head over and check things out.  Since neither Kat, nor I, were too excited about said digging vehicle, we decided to leave the boys to their toys and do a bit of river exploring.   Portland is many wonderful things and a great part of its beauty lies in all of it’s rivers.  I’m a beach girl myself and never really saw the appeal of rivers but I decided maybe it was time I checked it out.  So, armed with a book about cool hiking trails in Portland, us girls headed out for an adventure.  We decided to try a river park called Kelly Point Park which was about 10 minutes away from Kat’s house.  We drove through a massive industrial dock area and then, wham-o, we turned the corner and were engulfed by huge trees and dappled sunlight.  Don’t you just love it when you find a pocket of green in the midst of grey concrete?  We parked the car and headed down the hiking path with the other families.  There were a ton of very happy looking dogs, fishing poles, and coolers around.  The path lead through some trees and then down to the banks of the Willamette river and it was gorgeous.

Who knew there was sand at the river?  I sure didn’t.  And it was beautiful, white, clean sand too!  Since it’s a river, there was none of that annoying sticky salt feeling you get at the beach and no stinky smell.  The trees reached almost to the water line so there were only pockets of cleared space all along the river bank.  Kat and I settled onto a fallen log to chat while the girls ran and played and splashed.  We felt like we had the river all to ourselves.  We had only one shovel but that was ok.  Turns out all you need is a river + sticks to make two little girls very very happy.  Who knew?

There were no waves to scare you and plenty of boats and jet skies to watch idly from the river bank.  The trees provided plenty of shade.  I could have easily hung out there all day long I think.  But there was more exploring to do so we hiked back up to the path to continue our journey.  Our next destination?  The place where the Columbia and the Willamette rivers meet.   It was easy to find.  All we had to do was look for the giant anchor marking the spot!

You see anchor, they see climbing toy.  Leina actually wanted to take it home to our backyard!  Yeah, I don’t think so.  But she sure did love climbing it!

It was a beautiful, peaceful, fun day – a total recharge of all systems.  I’m so glad we went up to see Kat and have our adventure.  We ended at DQ with dipped cones and Blizzards.  I’m thinking we may just have to ditch the boys and do this outing again!

Unbelievable

Right now, it is so wonderfully gorgeous it steals your breath.  Usually, May and June are full of gloom and clouds and moaning about where the sun has gone.  But this year, we are being treated to a glorious Spring.  So much so that we opened up the back deck this weekend and Kevin cleaned up the grill.  Every night we’ve eaten dinner outside and it has been heaven.  Leina and Kulia help set the table and Artie runs about like a mad dog under our feet.  We eat slower and sit around longer.  Kevin and I get to talk and relax while the girls wander about the deck and yard doing what they do best – exploring and imagining.  Since it stays light until 9pm now, there isn’t any feeling of being rushed.  Yes, bedtimes are pushed back but it’s hard to notice since the kids are so happy and sleep so well after a day of swinging and running and screaming their little heads off.  The best part is that every few days it rains which keeps the temperature down and means I don’t have to water my plants.  I’m telling you, if someone where to come and visit me right now for a week, they would be making plans to move here.  Just perfect!

I’m actually dreading the hot and dry days of Summer and hoping this lush green Spring lingers just a bit longer.

Portland Love

There is a very kind and delicious article on Portland over at the NY Times.   I have to agree that Portland is a great place to come and eat.  And eat.  And maybe eat just a little more.  Even better, you can eat well and cheaply which is always a plus.  And that doesn’t even begin to cover the beer.   But what caught my eye in this article, was how aptly Matt Gross sums up the charm of Portland….

Amid economic catastrophe — Oregon has the country’s second-highest unemployment rate — there was a general indifference to wealth. In its place was a dedication to the things that really matter: hearty food and drink, cultural pursuits both high and low, days in the outdoors and evenings out with friends. It’s the good life, and in Portland it still comes cheap.

Maybe it’s coming from the Rat Race that is LA but I have to say, Mr. Gross hit the nail on the head.  Oh sure, we have some snobs here but the vast majority of folks you meet out and about are friendly, open and kind.  Money and cache don’t seems quite so important here.  Most people sport good walking shoes and a well loved raincoat and this ensemble will work no matter where you roam from hiking trails to restaurants.  We still know that the “good life” means enjoying the beauty of nature that surrounds us and the simple joy of looking a stranger in the eye and sharing a smile.  Ah Portland, you really know how to show a girl a good time!

The Joy of Books

Leina loves books.  Loves them!  She’s finally reached the stage where she can move beyond picture books which is very exciting.  She still likes a nice illustration or two but it’s all about the story now.  As I read, I like to sneak peaks at her face.  Usually, she’s staring off into space, her eyes unfocused, and I can just see the wheels in her head turning as she changes the words I read into pictures in her mind.  I love it!

Milly Molly Mandy

Leina is drawn to stories about old-fashioned girls doing everyday tasks.  I think she imagines herself in their shoes, sharing their adventures.  Her current favorite is Milly Molly Mandy.  I have never read these stories so they are new to me as well but oh are they sweet!   Milly-Molly-Mandy wanders about her little town having the simplest fun with her little friends.  There are no real morals to the stories and there is no drama.  No bad-guys or scary bits.  Just a sweet little girl going about her everyday life.   There are so many formulaic books out there for little girls and they are so dreadfully boring!  The whole fairy series makes my teeth grind every time I read one.  They are just plug and chug novels with a very slight twist done over and over and over.  Substitute colors for jewels for pets for flowers for instruments and print.  Ugh.  I can’t stand reading these books.  There is no charm and I am very, very big on charm.  Milly-Molly-Mandy?  Charm to spare baby!

Now I just need to find more old-fashioned stories for me old-fashioned girl.  Faires, you can rest in peace.

Getting My Groove Back

I have been a bit distracted lately.  I have 101 different projects running through my head and I’m trying to do them all at once.  This means I work on something for about 7.8 minutes before moving on to the next to do item.  It isn’t working out so well.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get yourself to focus on one task at a time?   Yesterday, I spent 10 minute agonizing over which unfinished task to tackle, decided it was too hard to decide, and ended up spending the rest of the night watching a Hallmark Channel movie.  Yes, it is that bad.

Maybe it’s because it’s finally spring and the weather is warmer and the days longer.   But whatever it is, my groove has been worn away.  Right now, I’m more like newly paved asphalt.  Flat and uninspired.  Luckily, it appears that the Hallmark Channel is continuously playing made for tv movies so I’m good there.

But seriously, I’ve set my chrissieterry mind to it and I will snap out of this.  Even if it means having Kevin hid the tv remote at night.  And in the morning too.

Maybe I should just cancel cable altogether.  (shudder)

I think I may have to fall back on my old reliable inspiration jump-start.  A trip to OfficeMax.  In law school, whenever I had a new paper or class or project to start, I always headed to the office supply store.  I would spend the afternoon buying notebooks, new pens and filing folders.   Sure, I’d be out 50 bucks but I’d be so inspired to start working I couldn’t wait to rush home and get organized.  There is nothing like a clean notebook and fresh pens to make a girl feel ready to take on the world.  I haven’t been to the office supply store for years.  I think this may be the problem.  No wonder I can’t get anything done!  I’m surrounded by half dried out ball points, dog-eared  notebooks, and blunt pencils.  It’s enough to drive a girl to the Hallmark channel I tell you.

Yes!  That’s it!  I need new pens!  This can be easily fixed.  Sheesh, sometime I can be so dense.   Look out efficiency, here I come!
